Improvement work started at at Norwich Thorpe Station last week and will continue until mid-2016. This will include replacement and relocation of the automatic ticket gates; improved cycle facilities; a new customer information office, retail unit and new ticket machines; new waiting room; and refurbished customer toilets.
Expansion of rail facilities at Port of Felixstowe
Two new rail mounted gantry cranes (RMGs) have been commissioned at Port of Felixstowe’s North Rail Terminal. Read more...

West Coast Railways suspension has been revoked by Network Rail. Although RAIL reported yesterday that it had refused to do so, today it reports NR's statement revoking the suspension, which permits WCR to operate from 00:01 this morning. Read the NR letter to WCR.

Today the Southwold Railway Trust planning application for Wenhaston Station was turned down...again. However the Trust believes it has grounds for appeal. Read the SRT Blog. NRS members enjoyed a fascinating talk on 16 April about the digital railway delivered with characteristic wit and humour by Steve Ashling. Concentrating control of the railway into regional operating centres poses great technological challenges and demands significant cultural change in the industry. The BBC News website reported on developments: 'Changing the signals on Britain's railway'.

This year will see Class 37 locomotive power in action out of Norwich hauling trains for Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth. An account of driver training for these machines can be found in RAIL magazine no. 772.

Following a Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD), ranked the most serious this year, on 7 March by a West Coast Railways (WCR) steam charter, Network Rail suspended WCR's network access rights. Further inquires and investigations may lead to revocation of the company's safety certificate and possible criminal prosecution. RAIL Website.
Driver error was the immediate cause of a train crashing through level crossing gates at Station Road, Lingwood on 31 October last year, a Network Rail investigation has concluded. Reported in EDP.

New railway stations on the Bittern Line? A study commissioned by Broadland District Council put forward a vision for development of the line. Reported in the EDP
Mid Norfolk Railway has acquired a vacuum/hand-operated turntable built in the 1930s by Ransome & Rapier at their factory in Ipswich. An article about the project is in the latest edition of Blastpipe, the MNR Journal, and was also reported in the EDP.

The North Norfolk Railway Steam Gala next weekend will be without the Y14 locomotive whose overhaul is not complete. However D49 Morayshire and Pannier 1501 will be the visitors with local support from 9F 92203 'Black Prince', B12 8572 and Standard 4 76084.
Mid-Norfolk Railway have rescheduled the Class 47 100 mile running day to Sunday 15 March. The event includes a volunteer recruitment day and Mother's Day services.

Mid Norfolk Railway have announced a postponement of the Class 47 100 mile running day on Saturday 28 February. They intend to run a railcar service instead with some journeys extended to Hoe.

Today the death was announced of Clive Morris, Chairman of the NNR - EDP. He visited our Show just 12 months ago to receive our donation towards the NNR’s Suburban Four Appeal. We send our We send our condolences to his widow and family.
